I remember being absolutely terrified. My parents and I spent the late afternoon when the storms hit hiding in my closet. It was my parents 9th wedding anniversary. No power, and storms all around. We were all three listening to my Mickey Mouse AM radio.
When the storms died down, we loaded up in the car and went to Cynthiana to check on my grandmother. She lived on White Oak Pike at the time, and the tornado that struck there passed not far away from her house. It took 90 minutes to make a 30 minute trip. The roads were blocked everywhere. She was OK when we got there. She raised 9 kids before, during, and after the depression, so she was already pretty tough.
This memory will always be with me.. The first time you are really scared usually does..

Wow, Andy, you have a great memory. Having been just shy of 5 at the time, I don't remember that much detail, only vague memories.
ReplyDeleteI remember. I was at my friend Anne Bell's house - Cynthiana, KY. We were playing wiffle ball. boy was it windy. We went into town and were dropped off for Wednesday night choir practice, which was called off. i was stranded at the church and everyone was going home. Mom and Dad were travelling back from Georgia that day - medical convention. Someone took me to my grandparents' home. I remember my parents coming home about an hour (I guess) later. We went home, then to the hospital where dad treated patients until early into the next morning. We slept in the basement once we finally came home.
ReplyDeleteI will never forget that my parents spoke of a funnel cloud that never touched down - but people said it would have wipe the town off the map.
I will never forget this date in time. Thanks for being an outlet for that.
